HOUSTON – UT Tyler senior Whitney Simmons established a new NCAA Division III national record in the Hammer Throw with a distance of 63.08 meters on Friday at the Tom Tellez Invitational.

Simmons, who won the NCAA DIII National Championship last season with a distance of 59.13 meters, had a previous personal-best of 62.59 meters earlier this year at the Marc Randle Classic. She broke the DIII record of 62.92 meters by Keelin Godsey of Bates at the 2006 NCAA DIII Championships.

Simmons is the national leader going into this year’s NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships which will be hosted from May 25-27 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. A White Oak native, Simmons is a two-time national championship after also winning the NCAA DIII Indoor Weight Throw title this year.
