AWARD: Simmons earns regional athlete of the year

TYLER – UT Tyler senior Whitney Simmons was named the USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Field Athlete of the Year and enters the NCAA Division III National Indoor Championships as the national leader in the Weight Throw with a throw of 19.77 meters last month in Frisco.

A two-time NCAA DIII Indoor All-American, Simmons will open competition at the national meet at 10 a.m. on Friday in Naperville, Illinois. She finished fifth at last year’s NCAA DIII Championships after earning runner-up as a junior. Simmons, who is looking for her second national title after winning the 2016 National Hammer Throw Championship in the Outdoor season, has put together her best indoor season as a senior where she enters the meet as the favorite.

Simmons, a senior from White Oak, Texas, was the NCAA Division III leader in the weight throw with a mark of 19.77m (64-10½). Her throw ranks 5th all-time in NCAA Division III history. Primarily competing against NCAA Division I and Division II athletes all year, she won five out of six event titles in the weight throw on the season.
