    UT Tyler senior Whitney Simmons will attempt to cap her historic career with a third national title and seventh all-America honor when she competes in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

    AWARD: Simmons wins USTFCCCA South/Southeast Field Athlete of the Year

    Simmons broke the NCAA Division III collegiate outdoor record in the hammer throw with a mark of 63.08m (206-11). She won 7 out of 8 hammer throw competitions on the season, competing primarily against NCAA Division I competitors. A conference champion in the hammer throw, she also won the conference title in the discus throw, where her top mark on the season came in at 40.39m (132-6).

    Matthew Godwin won the javelin event with a personal best of 57.04 meters at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagle Open and Whitney Simmons continued her dominance by winning the hammer with a throw of 62.78 meters.

    The UT Tyler Track and Field programs will compete at the SFA Skechers Performance Carl Knight Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Fletcher-Garner Track in Nacogdoches. The Patriots will be represented by 19 men and 15 women at the event that begins at 4 p.m. on Friday with the Javelin, Pole Vault and Long Jump and the Distance Carnival beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the 1,500 meters. Competition begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the Hammer and Triple Jump and running events will start at 1:30 p.m. with the 4x100 being the first event.
