DENTON – With just a couple meets left before the ASC Championships in two weeks, the UT Tyler women's track and field team had three competitors in the 1500m, shot put, discus and hammer throw at the North Texas Spring Classic.

Jessica Waninger and Claudia Cardenas finished 20th and 22nd, respectively in the women's 1500m run. Ashton Wells also finished fourth in the hammer throw and ninth in the shot put, while also competing in the discus.

On the men's side, both Ross Renfroe and Taylor Reed won their respective events in both the 1500m and pole vault.

In a field complete with Division I teams, including Dallas Baptist, Louisiana-Monroe, UT-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin and host North Texas among others, UT Tyler held its own with Top 10 finishes in several different events.

Renfroe won the 1500m with a time of 4:00.37 in the finals, just 1.5 seconds short of breaking Ben Donnan's school record set in 2007. He edged UT-Arlington's Ozie Hood by 0.82 seconds in a field of 31 competitors, whereas teammates Will Krogman (24th), Mark Saroni (27th) and Jared Haney (29th) also followed.

Reed won the pole vault with a vault of 4.90m/16'1", bettering his school record for a third time this season. He improved on his NCAA provisional mark by clearing 16'1" ahead of 15 other competitors.

Chris Stonestreet also placed fifth in the men's hammer throw, improving on each throw and launching a school-record 47.67m throw in the finals – which also bettered his school record of 47.62m. He also placed eighth in the shotput and 14th in the discus. Joel Hunt tied his school record long jump of 6.76m en route to a 12th place finish of 22 competitors and was also 11th in the triple jump.

Both teams will be back in action April 17 in Waco at the Michael Johnson Classic hosted by Baylor.
