ABILENE, Texas -- Chris Stonestreet, Jeff Chandler and Warren Brown all won their respective events on Friday to help the UT Tyler men's track and field team lead after day one at the 2011 American Southwest Conference Championships at McMurry.
The Patriots men posted 88 points and held and eight point lead over top-ranked McMurry. Texas Lutheran led on the women's side with 94 points; the UT Tyler women were on fourth with 15 points on the day.
In men's field events, Stonestreet took the conference championship in the hammer throw with a mark of
158-01.25 for UT Tyler.
McMurry's Paul Davis and Marcus Thompson
highlighted the hosts' performance by winning the shot put and long
jump respectively. Davis posted a throw of 53 feet and 0.25 inches
defeating his competition by more than nine feet to take the ASC title.
Thompson won the long jump with a mark of 23 feet and 1.25 inches.
Concordia-Texas' Chris Randle rounded out the
men's field events winning the high jump with a mark of six feet and
eight inches.
The only running events of day one were the steeplechase and the
10,000-meter run - both won by the Patriots on the men's side. UT Tyler's Jeff Chandler took
the crown in the men's steeplechase with a time of 10:19.44 while Hardin-Simmons' Maloree Kendall won the women's race with a time of 12:09.83 while .
In the
10,000-meter race, Warren Brown of UT Tyler won the title with a
time of 36:31.38 while TLU's Keelin Treacy took the women's title with a
time of 41:03.38.
The remaining field events including the pole vault, javelin, discus,
and triple jump resume at 9 a.m. Saturday with the remaining running
events set to begin with a rolling time schedule at Noon.
