FRISCO – UT Tyler senior Whitney Simmons recorded the seventh best mark in NCAA Division III history with a Weight Throw of 19.34 meters and Zach Richardson broke the school’s 400-meter record with a time of 50.37 at the Indoor Track & Field Classic on Thursday at the Ford Center in The Star. The mark for Simmons is the best non-National Championship throw with the only greater distances winning national titles.

The Patriots will compete in multiple events on Friday at the Dunamis Sports Group College Classic II back at The Star.

Simmons, who is a two-time Indoor All-America in the event, has now set personal and program records in three straight meets including a 19.10 two weeks ago at Boston University. She won the meet in Frisco with Abilene Christian’s Lonnie Smith taking second with a mark of 17.79 meters and UT Arlington’s Sara Lennman in third at 17.76. Throwers from Sam Houston, Texas A&M-Commerce, Grambling, McMurry and Angelo State also competing. The White Oak native also won and set a previous record with a throw of 18.89 meters at Missouri Southern. Her throw of 19.34 meters is the seventh farthest throw with the top mark being 20.98 meters from Robyn Jarocki who had a throw of 20.98 meters for Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the 2006 NCAA DIII Championships. The sixth best was 19.55 by Alexia Child and Melanie Brickner at the 2012 and 2015 NCAA Championships. Lydia Meier won last year’s NCAA DIII National Championship with a throw of 19.14.

Richardson’s record-setting run broke teammates Logan Houser’s time of 50.55 at Terrier Invitational two weeks ago in Boston. A sophomore from Waxahachie, Richardson ran a 51.01 at that meet in Boston before taking the record with his time of 50.37 in Frisco.

UT Tyler opens the Outdoor season next Friday, Feb. 17 with the East Texas Time Trials starting at 1 p.m. at Grace Community School.
