TYLER-- The UT Tyler women's tennis team won their fifth straight American Southwest Conference Championship, with a 5-0 Sunday evening defeat of Texas-Dallas at the 2012 ASC Tennis Championship Tournament. Senior Morgan Wilkins was named tournament MVP after a strong performance.
After waiting most of the day for the men's tournament to end, the Patriots wasted no time in putting the pressure on the Comets, winning the doubles competition 3-0.
Amy Friesenhahn and Sydni Hersmdorf won their No. 1 doubles showdown, 8-5, while teammates Jessica Blundell and Jennifer Payne won 8-4. Ashley Albro and Wilkins finished off the doubles sweep, winning 8-2 over UT Dallas.
In singles action, Payne was the first Patriot to win her matchup, a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cindy Tiu of UTD.
Wilkins then ended the match with a dominating performance, winning 6-1, 6-1, to capture the title for the Patriots.
With their ASC crown, the Patriots earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Regional Tournament, the weekend of May 11-13.
Joining Wilkins on the All-tournament team were Albro, Payne and Blundell.
