PREVIEW: @patriotstennis to host CTX in ASC quarterfinals

TYLER – The No. 36-ranked UT Tyler Patriots will host the American Southwest Conference Women’s Tennis Championships this week at the Summers Tennis Center where they will be looking to win the ninth tournament title in program history.

The Patriots (13-7) ran through the ASC East Division with a perfect 5-0 record to secure the divisional title and hosting privileges and will welcome UT Dallas, Hardin-Simmons, East Texas Baptist, Howard Payne, LeTourneau, Concordia and Ozarks to Tyler for the three-day, single-elimination event that begins on Thursday with four matches and concludes with an 11 a.m. championship match on Saturday. 

UT Tyler will open the tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday against Concordia (8-9) with that winner advancing to the semifinals which is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday. The Patriots are ranked No. 10 in the ITA West Region and finished as the tournament’s runner-up to ETBU last year, but has won the tournament in eight of the last 10 years. UT Tyler was 5-1 on its home court this season, including going 4-0 against ASC foes in Tyler. ETBU is the defending and comes into the tournament with an 8-9 overall record, including dropping a 5-4 decision to the Patriots two weeks ago to decide the ASC East champion.

UT Tyler senior Marisa Quevedo comes into the postseason tournament with a 5-1 record in first singles and is 2-1 in doubles play with Nancy Perez and 2-1 with Lauren Kuhn., while senior Alexis Arrieta is 6-5 on the season. Arrieta is 4-2 in first singles matches and has also won two matches in second singles. Caitlyn Cox leads the team with 10 wins in singles play coming into the tournament, while Kuhn and Savannah Seely have eight wins. Molly Hinkle is 6-5 and Victoria Kniffen is 4-1 on the season. In doubles, Arrieta and Alexandra McKissick lead the team with a 7-3 record. The partnership is 4-2 in first doubles and 3-1 in second doubles. They come into the postseason on a three-match winning streak.

CTX went 2-4 in ASC play this season and is the fourth seed out of the West Division. The Tornados have lost two straight matches coming into the tournament, both 7-2 losses to Hardin-Simmons and McMurry. UT Dallas is the top seed out of the ASC West Division after rolling through with a 6-0 conference record. The Comets, who are ranked No. 11 in the West Region, are 10-3 on the season including 8-1 wins over UMHB, Concordia and Hardin-Simmons to complete the season.

Spectator Policies and Guidelines

ADA Accommodations: Trained guide dogs, signal dogs, or "service animals" are permitted inside athletic venues.

Bag Search: All bags are subject to search upon entry and within athletic venues.

Banners and Signs: Please note:

  • Signs cannot be hung on any surface;
  • Signs cannot obstruct another guest's view;
  • Signs cannot cover existing advertising or signage;
  • Signs must be in good taste;
  • Signs may not be commercial or political in nature;
  • Signs may not be constructed of wood or metal material.

Bottles and Cans: It is prohibited to enter athletic venues with glass bottles or cans. A search may be conducted at the gates to assist in maintaining an absence of these and other prohibited items from entering the stadium.

Cameras/Video Recorders: Hand-held still camera photography is permitted at games for noncommercial personal photography. The use of tripods or video photography of any type is not permitted.

Cellular Phones: Usage of cellular phones is allowed, so long as it does not disturb other fans in the area or interfere with their ability to enjoy the game.

Concession Stands: UT Tyler provides a wide range of food and beverage items for sale at athletic events.

Coolers: Coolers are not allowed inside athletic venues.

Ejection: Law enforcement and game management personnel reserve the right to eject any person whose behavior is unruly or illegal in nature. Game tickets will be collected from those fans without refund and the guest will be escorted from the venue.

First Aid: First aid is available during all events by contact game management personnel.

Lost and Found: Lost and found articles should be taken to the nearest game management staff member. After an event, all found articles will be taken to the athletic department offices. Call (903) 566-7105 for information following an event.

Lost Children/Parents: All lost children should be escorted to the nearest law enforcement and game management staff member. Lost children will then be escorted to the nearest security center. Lost parents should follow the same procedure.

Paging: Paging is permitted in case of medial emergencies only. If a medical emergency arises, contact the game management personnel.

Prohibited and Restricted Items

  • Alcohol; Bottles and Cans; Illegal Drugs; Confetti; Firearms and Weapons; Fireworks; Animals; Horns, whistles, noise makers; Signs, flags, and sticks; Umbrellas; Laser pointers; Food and beverages of any kind; Any container other than soft-sided purses, camera bags, fanny/back packs, and diaper bags less than 12" by 12" by 12"; Any item deemed to be a safety or security hazard.

Radios/Televisions: Radios and televisions are permitted so long as they do not disturb others seated nearby.

Restrooms: Restrooms are located at all venues.

Stadium Emergencies: In the event of a serious emergency, game management staff, law enforcement and fire personnel are available to assist all patrons, including those with disabilities.
