RECAP: @patriotstennis rolls past HPU into ASC semis

ABILENE – The UT Tyler Patriots are moving on to the American Southwest Conference Women’s Tennis Championship semifinals after rolling to a 5-0 win over Howard Payne on Thursday at the Streich Tennis Center.

The Patriots will play UT Dallas at 11: 30 a.m. on Friday in the semifinals with the winner advancing to the finals at 11 a.m. on Saturday. UT Tyler has won three straight ASC titles and eight overall.

“We battled today through the elements and the girls got a win against a good team in HPU,” UT Tyler head coach Joe Vann said. “UT Dallas will play great singles, so it will be really important that we play some solid doubles tomorrow. The girls are ready for the matchup.”

On Thursday, UT Tyler cruised through Howard Payne starting with three doubles wins beginning with Alexis Arrieta and Tori Musngi earning an 8-2 first doubles win followed by Alexandra McKissick and Savannah Seely securing an 8-6 third doubles win. Lauren Kuhn and Nancy Perez would take the score to 3-0 and complete the doubles sweep with an 8-5 second doubles win. Arrieta and Musngi improved to 14-4 in doubles play with the win, while Kuhn and Perez are 11-5 and McKissick and Seely improved to 10-3.

Arrieta and Musngi would make quick work of their opponents in singles play and give the Patriots the 5-0 match win. Arrieta rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 first singles win over Alex Marlin followed by Musngi who cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brittony Walker to end the match. Musngi improved to 10-4 in singles play with the win and Arrieta now has eight wins going into Friday’s semifinal.

UT Dallas advanced with a 5-0 win over LeTourneau on Thursday.
