@patriotstennis men earn wins over Linfield, No. 39 SU

GEORGETOWN – The No. 20-ranked UT Tyler men’s tennis team earned a 5-4 win over No. 39 Southwestern and a 9-0 victory against Linfield on Saturday at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts.

The Patriot women fell 6-3 to No. 25 Linfield in their only match of the day and final of the weekend. The UT Tyler men are now 3-1 against ranked opponents and will return to action at 4 p.m. on Sunday against No. 4 Middlebury in their final match of the weekend on the Southwestern University courts.

Arthur Fagundes improved to 9-0 on the season by cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 first singles win over Nickoloz Snovely, while Daniel Rodriguez is now 11-2 during his freshman year after a 6-0, 6-4 third singles victory. The match against the Pirates came down to fifth singles, where senior Joey Fischer earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win to give the Patriots their 5-4 win. Fischer, who is a Georgetown native, would also earn an 8-3 second doubles win with partner Pablo Gomez against Southwestern. UT Tyler led 2-1 after doubles with Ford Cunningham and Ryan Elwood securing an 8-5 third doubles win. Fagundes and Jose McIntyre fell to 3-2 on the year with a 9-8 (9-7) loss in first doubles against the Pirates.

The Patriots opened the day with a 9-0 win over Linfield with Vinicio Hadlich, Rodriguez, McIntyre, Gabriel Hidalgo, Cunningham and Ryan Elwood taking wins in singles play. Fagundes and McIntyre were 8-4 first doubles winners, while Fischer/Gomez took an 8-4 second doubles win and Elwood/Cunningham an 8-4 third doubles win.

The UT Tyler women fell to 6-8 on the season with its 6-3 loss to No. 25 Linfield on Saturday with Alexis Arrieta and Tori Musngi taking an 8-2 first doubles win and Nancy Perez and Alexandra McKissick securing singles wins. Arrieta and Musngi improved to 11-3 on the season with their win while McKissick took a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 fifth singles win and Perez a 7-6, 6-4 fourth singles win.

The Patriot women return to action next Saturday with an American Southwest Conference match at Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas before hosting Trinity at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 2 at the Summers Tennis Courts.
