TYLER – The UT Tyler women's tennis partnership of Tori Musngi and Alexis Arrieta opened the season with an 8-3 first doubles win over Dallas Baptist’s Lacy Sprinkle and Liz Slaughter on Saturday at the Summers Tennis Center.
Musngi and Arrieta were playing as doubles for the first time together and were able to secure the win for the Patriots who to an 8-1 team loss to DBU on the first day of the 2017 season. Musngi, a senior from Rockwall, won her 58th career doubles match which is tied for the eighth most in program history with Ashley Albroand Amy Friesenhahn. Arrieta, a junior from Georgetown, won her first doubles match after transferring to UT Tyler following two seasons at Midwestern State.
Dallas Baptist, which plays out of the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference, would take second and third doubles wins and then sweep the singles for the win. In second doubles, Savannah Seely and Nancy Perez took an 8-1 loss and Victoria Kniffen and Lauren Kuhn fell in third doubles for the Patriots.
Arrieta played first singles for UT Tyler and would take a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Ana Marija Banic, while Musngi took a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Lacy Sprinkle in second singles. Kuhn and Perez fell in 6-2, 6-0 decisions in third and fourth singles.
UT Tyler will open American Southwest Conference play next weekend with matches against McMurry and Hardin-Simmons in Abilene before returning home to host three straight matches. The Patriots are the three-time defending ASC Champions and have won eight of nine ASC titles.
