@patriotstennis secures ASC East title, Will host Championship

MARSHALL – Nicole Musngi had to wait four days before she could resume her match but the UT Tyler senior didn’t flinch as she secured an American Southwest Conference Championship for the Patriots with a 6-3, 6-4 win over ETBU’s Jabree McElaine on Wednesday in match that was postponed on Saturday after rain halted the match.

Musngi led 6-3, 2-1 when the fifth singles match was stopped on Saturday and closed out the win and lifted UT Tyler (18-2, 5-0 ASC) to a 5-4 win over the Tigers. The No. 35-ranked Patriots will host next week’s ASC Championship on April 21-23 at the Summers Tennis Center. The tournament is an eight-team, single-elimination competition with the winner earning an NCAA Division III Championship automatic berth. UT Tyler has won seven of the past eight ASC tournaments, including two straight.

The Patriots jumped out to a 2-1 lead over ETBU on Saturday with Alexandra McKissick and Musngi earning an 8-6 second doubles win along with Lauren Kuhn and Kaitlyn Huskey taking an 8-4 third doubles decision. McKissick would also secure a 6-2, 6-4 fourth singles win over Kellie Cawthon on Saturday, while Tori Musngi was a 6-4, 6-4 second singles winner to set her sister up to win the East Division in fifth singles. Janae Warren also resumed her match from Saturday but dropped a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 sixth singles match. Nicole Musngi is now 64-18 in singles play and 70-26 in doubles action in her career, including a a 16-2 doubles record with McKissick and an 12-3 singles record in her senior season. Tori Musngi picked up her 43rd singles win against ETBU on Saturday, while Kuhn and Huskey are a staggering 17-1 as doubles team this season. 

UT Tyler will return to action at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Trinity in final regular season match of the season. The men's team will play at Trinity on Friday and will then challenge Whitman at 1 p.m. on Saturday on Trinity's court in San Antonio.
