TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s tennis team opened the season with a pair of victories over Hardin-Simmons and McMurry on Sunday at the Summer Tennis Center with the Patriots sweeping all six doubles matches during the first day of the season.

Mary Alice Blacketer began her UT Tyler career with two wins at first singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Michaela Ellison of Hardin-Simmons before taking a 6-1, 6-4 match against McMurry’s Chloe Patterson. A senior from Lubbock, Blacketer transferred to UT Tyler this season where she also picked up a pair of doubles victories with teammate Tori Musngi on Sunday. Blacketer and Musngi started their season together with an 8-2 win over Hannah Smith/Jenna Smith (HSU) and then cruised to an 8-1 win over Bree Brosig/Samantha Ruiz in the second match.

Musngi, who was last season’s ASC East Division Player of the Year, would open her season with a second singles 6-1, 6-2 loss to Shayne Cook (HSU) but bounce back with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her McMurry opponent. Musgni is now 33-22 in her singles career and 42-20 in doubles. Lauren Kuhn would also split a pair of matches for the Patriots on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-1 third singles win over McMurry’s Samantha Ruiz after falling 6-3, 6-2 to HSU’s Hannah Smith in the morning match. Alexandra McKissick secured two wins for the Patriots, starting with a 6-4, 6-3 win over HSU and then a 6-0, 6-1 win over McM in fourth singles, while Nicole Musngi earned the 55th singles win of her career at UT Tyler with a 7-5, 6-1 win in fifth singles against HSU.

Janae Warren would cruise to a 6-1, 6-0 sixth singles win against HSU in her only action of the day and Savannah Seely secured a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win in sixth singles against McMurry to close out singles play.

McKissick and Nicole Musngi would add two wins to the Patriots total in doubles along with Lauren Kuhn and Kaitlyn Huskey in third doubles.

“We played very good doubles today,” UT Tyler head coach Chris Bizot said. “Overall a good start to the season.”

The Patriots return to action at 1 p.m. next Sunday with a match against LSU-Alexandria at the Summers Tennis Center.
