RICHARDSON, Texas -- Five student-athletes from UT Tyler were honored by the American Southwest Conference as Players of the Week in their respective sports for the week ending April 1, the league office announced. The Patriots swept the honors in men's and women's golf and tennis.

On the links, senior Matt Stephens (Mt. Belvieu, TX / Lamar) carded a 3-under-par 68-69—137 to win the individual title and guide the Patriots to the team title at the LeTourneau Spring Classic at Pinecrest Country Club in Longview, Texas. Stephens, who takes the league’s top weekly award for the third straight time, was the only golfer in the field of 59 to shoot two rounds under 70.

In women's golf, freshman Katie Crawford (Georgetown, TX / GHS) was the only NCAA Division III golfer to post a top-5 finish at the LeTourneau Spring Classic at par-72 Pinecrest Country Club in Longview, Texas. Crawford carded a 75-79—154 to finish fourth in the field of 48 and was just five strokes off the lead. She also led the Patriots to a runner-up team finish.

On the tennis courts, sophomore Ryan Spencer (Katy, TX / Kennesaw State) was perfect at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles against ASC East Division opponent Mississippi College and Millsaps. Spencer, who pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (1-0) win against MC, helped the Patriots to a pair of team victories. He teamed with Kevin Singer in doubles.

For women's tennis, Sydni Hermsdorf (Spring, TX / Klein HS) was perfect at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles to fuel team wins against ASC East Division opponent Mississippi College and Millsaps. Hermsdorf, who did not drop a set, teamed with Amy Friesenhahn in doubles.

Finally in softball, junior right-hander Heather Abshire (Lafayette, LA / LHS) went 3-1, allowing just four runs over 22 1/3 innings of work against LeTourneau, Mississippi College and nationally-ranked Pacific Lutheran. She worked around 24 hits and struck out 10 batters. Abshire, who earned the division’s top weekly hitting award last week, also contributed for the nationally-ranked Patriots at the plate by collecting seven hits and four RBIs.
