Patriots' Women Headed Back to ASC Finals

BELTON, Texas -- The University of Texas at Tyler women's tennis team posted a 5-2 win over Hardin-Simmons in the semifinals of the 2011 American Southwest Conference Championships, earning the Patriots a spot in Sunday's finals at Mary Hardin-Baylor's Yvonne Li Tennis Center.

The Patriots (18-6) will take on host and West Division champion UMHB in the championship which is scheduled for 30-minutes after the conclusion of the men's finals at 9 a.m.

UT Tyler, the East Division's top seed, took a 2-1 lead on doubles wins by Sydni Hermsdorf and Emily McRae (9-7) on the No. 1 court, and Ashley Albro and Lauren Giovannini (8-9) on the No. 3 court.  

The Patriots went up 3-1 as Jessica Blundell won, 6-2, 6-0, over Angie Nhan on the No. 4 singles court, but Hardin-Simmons' Lisa Mertz cut UT Tyler's lead to 3-2 with a win over Michelle Hagler, 7-6, 7-0, at No. 1 singles.

Hermsdorf used a 7-5, 6-3 win over HSU's Lauren Jay at No. 2 singles to stretch UT Tyler's margin to 4-2, and Morgan Wilkins rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win on the No. 6 court to give the Patriots the win.

Like the men, the Patriots' women will be playing for their fourth-straight conference title.
