Tennis Teams Sweep LeTourneau, La. Coll.

LONGVIEW/TYLER -- The University of Texas at Tyler men's and women's tennis teams cruised to American Southwest Conference sweeps of LeTourneau and Louisiana College on Saturday, earning 9-0 wins across the board, to remain perfect in East Division play.

The wins improve the women to 11-5 (3-0) and the men to 12-5 (3-0).

Emily McRae and Sydni Hermsdorf, along with Ashley Albro and Lauren Giovannini, got the day started with 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, against LeTourneau. Jessica Blundell and Michelle Hagler took the No. 2 court, 8-1.

In singles play, Hagler took down LeTourneau's Sarah Case, 6-1, 6-1, on the No. 1 court while Hermsdorf won in straight sets at No. 2 singles.

Giovannini, Blundell, Brittany Tich, and Morgan Wilkins finished out the sweep of singles action for the Patriots.

Against Louisiana College, the Patriots repeated the performance.

For the men, Josh Chavez scored a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over LeTourneau's Carlos Cantu, and Henrique Bellini and Adam Chirhart won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

Kevin Wright, Kevin Singer and Edward Timponi also won their singles matches.  

In doubles play, Chavez and Andrew Reznik took the No. 1 court, 8-5, and Chirhart and Bellini were winners by the same score on court No. 2. Singer and Wright took the third match, 8-1.

The afternoon meeting with Louisiana College was more of the same as Chavez, Bellini, Singer and Timponi each won their singles matches in straight sets.

The duos of Steven Prince/Morgan Graham, Shaun Maddox/Matt Vechione, and Ethan LaPlante/Doug Kierstead all rolled to 8-0 victories on the doubles courts.

Both squads will hit the road next weekend for non-conference matches in Belton, Georgetown, and San Antonio.
