UT Tyler Women Earn First-Ever Victory over Trinity

Friday, April 2, 2010

TYLER – Winless in all four of their previous matches against Trinity University, the 29th-ranked UT Tyler women's tennis team got over the hump today with a thrilling, 5-4 win at Summers Tennis Center to earn a fifth consecutive win and move to 13-3 overall on the season.

The Patriots trailed 2-1 after doubles, falling at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions in a pair of 8-6 and 8-4 decisions. Sydni Hermsdorf and Emily McRae, however, did what they've been doing all year at No. 2 doubles to score the Patriots' first point, defeating the Tigers' Erin Jamison and Katie Budinsky 8-4 for an unprecedented 16th consecutive victory.

Trinity (6-12) stretched its match lead to 4-1 with lopsided wins at No. 2 and 4 singles, capped by a 6-2, 6-2 win for No. 50 Katie Griffith who took down Lauren Nielsen. Wins at the No. 5 and 6 spots for UT Tyler pulled the Patriots within a 4-3 score and setup an exciting finish.

Michelle Hagler's upset win over 27th-ranked Katy Poettcker tied the match at 4-4, pulling out a three-set win by 1-6, 6-0 and 6-3 scores, before Hermsdorf's gritty three-set win at No. 3 singles capped the thrilling come-from-behind win.

The Patriots will close out the regular season against UTD on April 10 in Richardson.
