Tennis Cleans Up at ASC Individuals

ABILENE, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s tennis teams got their respective 2009-2010 seasons off to roaring starts this past weekend with a pair of very strong showings at the American Southwest Conference Individual Tennis Championships in Abilene.

The men won eight of the nine singles flights at the tournament and three of the four doubles flights, while the women won all eight of the singles flights and two of the four doubles flights.

In singles action, seniors Rachel Anders, Brad Fenter, and Nick Kreines, juniors Lauren Giovannini, Michelle Hagler and Kelly Rittenhouse, sophomores Joshua Chavez, Adam Chirhart, Sydni Hermsdorf, Shaun Maddox, Lauren Nielsen, Brittany Trich, and Kevin Wright and freshmen Austin Gonzalez, Summer Smith and Matthew Vechione combined to win 16 of the 17 flights.

In doubles action, the teams Chirhart and Chavez, Fenter and Kreines, Giovannini and Trich, Hermsdorf and junior Emily McRae and Maddox and Gonzalez all took home the top prize in their respective flights.

With the conference tournament in the books, the focus of both teams now moves to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regionals where the winners of each of the four top flights will advance to the ITA Small College National Championships.

The men’s regional will take place on Sept. 25-27 and will be hosted by Texas-Dallas in Richardson, while Trinity (Texas) will host the women’s regional in San Antonio on Oct. 2-4.
