INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to St. Peter, Minn., and Claremont, Calif., respectively, for the second straight season to compete in a NCAA Regional.

In the women’s regional, the ASC Champion Patriots (17-8) will return to Claremont where they will take on Whitworth (21-4) on Friday. The Pirates will enter the tournament by virtue of the automatic qualifier from the Northwest Conference.

The winner of that match will advance to the second round where they will take on the hosts, 7th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer (17-4). The Sagehens eliminated the Patriots in the second round of last year’s regionals.

The winner of the women’s regional will advance to the 2009 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis National Championship at the Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, Ga. The event will be hosted by Oglethorpe University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission.

While the women travel west again, the men will head north to Minnesota for the second consecutive year. Like last season, the regional will be once again hosted by Gustavus Adolphus and the ASC Champion Patriots will once again receive a first-round bye.

On Saturday, No. 16 UT Tyler (19-6) will take on the winner of the first round match between Luther (36-5) and Concordia (Wis.) (14-10). Luther won its way into the tournament by winning the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, while Concordia was crowned the champion of the Northern Athletics Conference.

The winner of the men’s regional will advance to the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis National Championship at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. The men’s event will be hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

On Wednesday, the NCAA will announce the field for the National Singles & Doubles tournaments to be played on May 19-21 in Lawrenceville and Claremont.
