Women's Tennis to Open NCAA Tournament in California

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The American Southwest Conference champion University of Texas at Tyler women’s tennis team (17-3) will travel to Claremont, Calif., to open play in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship.

On May 2, the No. 28 Patriots will take on Division III independent and 24th-ranked, Chapman (11-3). The Panthers enter the tournament by virtue of a Pool B bid. Eight Pool B bids are allotted for schools in conferences without automatic qualifiers or independents.

The winner of UT Tyler’s match with Chapman will take on the host of the regional, No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer (14-7). The Sagehens enter the tournament as the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions.

On the other side of the regional bracket, No. 23 California-Santa Cruz (7-1) will meet Linfield (18-5) in the first round. UC Santa Cruz received entry into the tournament also via a Pool B bid, while Linfield comes in as the champion and automatic qualifier from the Northwest Conference.

The winner of the Santa Cruz-Linfield match will advance to the second round to take on No. 10 Redlands. Redlands enters the tournament via a Pool C, or at-large, bid. The Bulldogs fell in the SCIAC Championship match to Pomona-Pitzer.

The winner of the Claremont regional will advance to the Championship Round in St. Peter, Minn., hosted by Gustavus Adolphus. The Championship Round will consist of the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals and will take place May 13-15.
