Cowan Nets Second ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award, Seven Others Honored

RICHARDSON, Texas – R.J. Cowan of The University of Texas at Tyler was selected as the American Southwest Conference Men’s Track & Field Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday as announced by the conference. Cowan received the same honor in the fall for Men’s Cross Country.

Cowan, a junior Health & Kinesiology major from Whitehouse, Texas, currently has a 3.81 GPA and finished second in both the 5K and the 10K events at the ASC Track and Field Championships in April.

The ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award is in its inaugural year and is voted on by the league’s sports information directors. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must participate in 50 percent of his or her team’s events and have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA.

In addition to Cowan, UT Tyler had seven other student-athletes named to their respective sport’s Distinguished Scholar-Athlete team. The following students received the honor for their performances, athletically and academically, during the Spring 2008 season:
