UT Tyler men's and women's tennis teams are the USCAA Conference Champions for 2003.

Women's Team

The women’s tennis team won the USCAA conference championships and the singles and doubles titles.

The University of Dallas placed second and Tulsa’s Rhema Bible College third. Lauren Collum defeated Tabatha Wright from Rhema Bible College in the semifinals in three sets 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-1. She then defeated University Dallas’ Anna McMinn 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2 for the women’s conference title.

"They played their best tennis of the year, not only did they play smart, they hit hard under pressure to close out the match," said UT Tyler Coach Ken Olivier.

In the consolation finals UT Tyler’s Kayla Fedowitz defeated Krystle Sanders from Rhema Bible College by the score of 6-1, 6-0. After losing in the first round of the main draw, Fedowitz won three matches in a row to win the consolation tournament. Fedowitz teamed with Lorita Morgan in doubles and defeated Sanders and Wright (Rhema Bible) 8-4 before losing in the quarterfinals to McMinn and Cramer 8-5.

Receiving All-American conference honors for UT Tyler in singles and doubles were Katie Burrow and Lauren Collum.

Men’s Team

The Men’s team placed first in the conference tournament, University of Dallas was second and Rhema Bible College was third.

In the singles semifinals Diego Bedoy (Rhema Bible College) defeated Dallas Long by the score of 7-5, 6-4, and Greg Jones (UT Tyler) defeated teammate Andy White 6-1, 6-0. Jones and Bedoy squared off in the finals and it was a battle of youth versus experience -- Bedoy, the older, more experienced senior, against Jones the freshman. Bedoy was able to move the ball around the court effectively and played a smart game; but was no match for Jones’ speed and power. After defeating Bedoy soundly in the first set, Bedoy made his comeback effort but fell short of winning the second set and Jones’ won the title in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Hunek and Jones defeated UT Tyler netters Kevin Cook and Blake Ericsson in the finals by the score 8-5. The match demonstrated power and athleticism, good communication and skilled shot making ability.

Receiving All-American for UT Tyler in singles on the men’s team were Greg Jones, Andy White and Dallas Long. Doubles All-Americans were Greg Jones, Maciek Hunek, Kevin Cook and Blake Ericsson.
