NCAA Sends Patriots to California for Tennis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Texas at Tyler tennis teams will head to California for the regional round of the 2011 NCAA Tennis Championships, the NCAA announced Monday.

The Patriot men will play in the Santa Cruz, Calif. Regional Saturday and Sunday while the women will were assigned to the Claremont, Calif. Regional which begins Thursday.

Both programs received automatic bids to the national championships after capturing the ASC Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

UT Tyler's men (18-6) will open with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (25-3) while the other regional semifinal has UC-Santa Cruz (9-4) meeting Pomona-Pitzer (17-5). The Patriots are the lone non-California team.

For the women, the regional quarterfinal has UT Tyler (17-7) meeting Linfield (Ore.) (15-4) on Thursday.

The winner will face Pomona-Pitzer (15-3) on Friday.

The other quarterfinal has Chapman (Calif.) (8-10) taking on Grinnell (Iowa) (18-6). The winner plays host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday.

The women's regional final is Saturday.
 
The regional winners will advance to the national finals, which is also in California this year, set for May 24-29.
