TYLER – Champions Territory has been defended for the third straight year by the UT Tyler women’s tennis team.

Within two minutes, Tori Musngi was a winner on Court 2 and Nicole Musngi took her fifth singles match to give UT Tyler a 5-0 win over East Texas Baptist as the Patriots ran through the American Southwest Conference Championship by not dropping a single match throughout the tournament. UT Tyler has now won three straight ASC tournament championships and eight in program history, while the Tigers were denied their first ASC title after reaching the finals with a semifinal win over Hardin-Simmons on Friday.

The Patriots (21-3) have now won eight of their last nine matches and have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament which will be announced on Monday, May 9. The national tournament will be played from May 23-28 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Tori Musngi won her second singles match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Tiffany Stankiewicz to give the Patriots a 4-0 advantage, while Nicole Musngi was on the fifth court moments away from sealing a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jabree McClaine. The Musngi wins ended the match and secured the 5-0 final score with Mary Alice Blacketer leading 7-6, 2-2 in first singles and Lauren Kuhn, Alexandra McKissick and Janae Warren still in unfinished matched.

UT Tyler needed only two singles wins after it had swept through doubles play to get out to the 3-0 lead. The Patriots, ranked No. 33 nationally and No. 7 regionally, were out fast to a 1-0 lead with Kuhn and Huskey taking an 8-1 third doubles win to improve to 21-1 on the season before McKissick and Nicole Musngi claimed an 8-0 second doubles win. In first doubles, Blacketer and Tori Musngi were down 6-5, but fought back and earned a 9-7 win to send the match to singles play with momentum that would carry over for the championship.

ETBU, which is ranked No. 10 in the region, ends its season with a 14-5 overall record including two losses to the Patriots. The first meeting between the two teams was a 5-4 win in Marshall.
