Monday, November 6, 2017

TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s soccer team received seven selections on the American Southwest Conference All-ASC teams, highlighted by senior defender Caroline Williams and senior goalkeeper Emily Hurley who were named to the first-team for the Patriots. Additionally, Caitlyn Mortus and Kathleen Johnson were named to the All-ASC second team, while Landri Edwards, Alexandria Clowers and Kaelyn Steitz are All-ASC third-team performers. UT Tyler finished the season with an 11-5-1 record and having outscored its opponents by a 29-15 margin throughout the season.

The 2017 ASC Women’s Soccer awards and all-conference teams are voted on by the league’s head coaches.

A senior from Frisco, Williams is a two-time all-conference selection for the Patriots as a defender. She started all 17 games for the Patriots in her final year and helped the team to nine shutouts.

“Caroline completely transformed herself as a player here and it was really fun for me to watch her play this year and see how much she has grown,” UT Tyler coach Stefani Webb said. “You could see the improvements to her game but to watch how much she loved this program and especially how much she loved her team was amazing. She played for the girl next to her every single day and I couldn’t be more proud.”

A senior goalkeeper from Sulphur Springs, Hurley recorded nine shutouts for the Patriots this season and made 58 saves. She played every minute in goal for the Patriots throughout the season. She would finish her career with 21 shutouts and 133 saves.

“I can honestly say that Emily Hurley was the biggest transformation this program has ever seen both as a goalkeeper and as a woman,” Webb said. “Who she became as a apart of this program is truly remarkable and a testament to her strength and the quality of character we have in the program. I am proud to have coach Em and watch first hand her transformation and couldn’t be more proud of her senior year.”

Mortus led the Patriots this season with five goals and three assists. A senior from Katy, Mortus had two games with two goals this season, and also led the team with 20 shots on goal. She finished her career with 16 goals and 10 assists. A junior from Arlington, Johnson contributed two assists and had 15 shots on goal and is now a two-time all-conference selection. Steitz earned All-ASC third team as a junior after recording four goals and an assist for the Patriots. A junior from McKinney, Steitz has seven goals in her career, including game-winners this season against McMurry and Sul Ross. Clowers and Edwards were both named to the All-ASC third team as freshmen after helping the Patriots to their nine shutouts and 11 wins. A defender from California, Clowers recorded assists against Concordia and Ozarks in addition to her defensive prowess. A first-year player from Katy, Edwards was a defensive leader throughout the season and also scored the game-winning goal in the 1-0 regular-season finale at Louisiana College and then had an assist in the ASC Championship quarterfinal game at East Texas Baptist.
