TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s soccer team earned its fifth shutout win of the season with a 3-0 victory over McMurry on Saturday in an American Southwest Conference game at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

The Patriots (6-3, 3-3 ASC) snapped a two-game losing streak with the win over the War Hawks (2-8, 0-5 ASC) and improved to 4-2 on their home field. UT Tyler has now outscored its opponents by a 17-4 margin this season and has still not allowed more than one goal in a game all year.

UT Tyler junior Kaelyn Steitz scored her third goal of the season in the fifth minute of play to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead when she gathered the ball off a deflection and put it in the back of the net. Nine minutes later the Patriots were leading 2-0 when Caitlyn Mortus sent in a cross that a McMurry defender would inadvertently turn into an own-goal.

With a comfortable 2-0 halftime lead with the War Hawks not having a single shot on goal, the Patriots would add their third goal in the 80th minute with Kiersten Ehler getting past the defense and goalkeeper to score her first career goal. A freshman who had a team-leading three shots on goal, Ehler became the seventh Patriot to score this season with her first goal.

UT Tyler goalkeeper Emily Hurley was credited with the shutout despite not having to face a single shot from McMurry, while the Patriot offense had 12 shots on goal. Mortus and Vanessa Rangel had two shots on goal each, while Kathleen Johnson, Jessica L’Hoste, Steitz and Sky Reynolds had one shot on goal each.

The Patriots will travel to play at Sul Ross next Saturday at noon in Alpine in their only game of the week before returning home to host East Texas Baptist on Oct. 12 and LeTourneau on Oct. 14 at the Perkins Soccer Complex.
