GEORGETOWN – UT Tyler’s Caitlyn Mortus and Kaelyn Steitz scored goals and Emily Hurley recorded her third shutout of the season as the Patriots earned a 2-0 non-conference win over Southwestern on Sunday at Varsity Field.

The Patriots (3-0) have now outscored their opponents by a 7-0 margin through three games this season with Mortus scoring three goals after recording her third off an assist from sophomore Bailey Wooten in the 11th minute of play. Mortus would assist on the goal scored by Steitz less than two minutes later as the Patriots grabbed a quick two-goal lead that would stand up the remaining 77 minutes of play.

“I thought today was a total team performance,” UT Tyler head coach Stefani Webb said. “We really did a good job of going at the game and creating some really good chances for ourselves. That was a great game to prepare us for our opening conference weekend. We will be ready to get after it on Thursday.”

The UT Tyler defense allowed only two shots on goal that were saved by Hurley, while the offense had nine shots on goal against the Pirates who fell to 0-4 on the season with the loss. Kathleen Johnson led the Patriots with three shots on goal and five total shots, while Caroline Williams, Mortus, Steitz, Maren Moore, Ashleigh Ackroyd and Taylor Tarsi each had shots on goal in the first road game of the season.

Mortus now has 14 goals and eight assists in her four years at UT Tyler, while Steitz has now has four goals in her career.

UT Tyler will now open American Southwest Conference play on Thursday against UT Dallas and Howard Payne on Saturday in Tyler.
