City of Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass was the honorary coach for the Patriots on Thursday.

TYLER-- The UT Tyler women's soccer team clinched a spot in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament for the fifth-straight season with after cruising to a 5-0 win over Louisiana College on Thursday evening.  Two goals by senior Emily Bechdol paced the offensive onslaught for the Patriots.

Bechdol's goals increased her season total to seven, a team-high for the Patriots.

Kristen Steele started the parade of goals with a nifty one-timer from Charity Shipman, who was able to beat the Lady Cats' defense with great ball control to make the score 1-0 at the 29:03 mark in the first half.

With 41 seconds remaining in the half, Bechdol extended the lead to 2-0 for UT Tyler with her first goal, taking the pass from Taylor Hernandez and putting it past the Louisiana College goalkeeper.

On a chilly and damp night, UT Tyler turned up the heat with three second-half goals. Bechdol added her second goal of the match with a penalty kick just four minutes into the second frame.

Jordan Johnson, who finished the evening with a team high six shots, gave the Patriots a 4-0 lead at the 64:56 mark off a pass from freshman Kayla Saul.

Freshman Haley Shipman found the back of the net for the first time this season to give the Patriots the final margin of 5-0.

Johnson finished with five shots-on-goal, followed by Steele and Bechdol who registered four each.

Louisiana College (2-16, 2-10) finished the match with only one shot on goal and no corner kicks.

UT Tyler finishes up the regular season with a 1 p.m. match against Mississippi College on Saturday at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
