Men Win Tuesday, Soccer Splits Austin Trip

AUSTIN -- The UT Tyler men’s and women’s soccer teams traveled to Austin on Tuesday for a rare early-week contest with American Southwest Conference foe Concordia, splitting the matches with the Tornadoes as the Patriots’ men won, 2-0, and the women dropped a close game.

The 16th-ranked UT Tyler men (10-2, 7-1 ASC) continued their winning streak with an 2-0 shutout over the Tornadoes, led by junior Chris Powell.

In the 20th minute, Powell gave the Patriots the lead after receiving a long throw-in from Jake Urbaniak which he put in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Powell made sure the Tornadoes were unable to answer by adding a beautiful insurance goal in the 80th minute, beating several Concordia defenders for his second goal of the match.

The Patriots out-shot the Tornadoes, 29-9, while totaling eight corner kicks to Concordia’s one.

Powell finished his stellar match with six shots on goal and Elijah Shipman had three attempts.

In the women’s game, the Patriots (8-5, 7-2 ASC) were unable to put the ball in the back of the net and were shutout for the first time in six matches.  UT Tyler’s impressive defensive shutout streak also ended in the loss.

Concordia (9-4, 7-2 ASC) scored the only goal of the match in the 73rd minute, when the long through ball by Axita Patel found Kendall Williams in stride who scored her eighth goal of the season.

Both teams registered double digit totals in shots, the Patriots with 14 while the Tornadoes tallied 23.

Goalkeeper Paige Harris finished with 12 saves, while junior Charity Shipman led the team with two shots on goal.

Both teams will be back in action on Thursday, hosting Centenary at the Citizens 1st Bank- Perkins Soccer Complex. The women will play at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.
