UT Tyler Golf Teams Open Season with Strong Finishes

SEGUIN - The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s golf teams maintained their team standings in the final rounds of their respective tournaments Tuesday, giving the Patriots men a third place finish and the UT Tyler women a sixth place spot in the season-opening events for both squads this week in Seguin.

The UT Tyler men shot their best round of the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational, hitting a combined 284 for the final 18 holes. That score was Tuesday’s best among all 15 teams in the tournament and gave the Patriots a three-day total of 860 (291-285-284) to finish just behind Texas Lutheran and Tyler Junior College who tied at 857. TLU, the tournament’s host, took first place after beating TJC in a tie-breaker.

All five UT Tyler team players and one individual placed in the tournament’s top 20, including Clay Holcomb who tied for fifth place to lead UT Tyler with a three-round total of 213 (70-70-73). No other team placed six golfers in the top 20.

Travis Johnson (215) tied for ninth, Jacob Walsh (218) tied for 14th, and Coy Beck, David Thompson and individual player Brandon Ellis all tied for 18th with a 54-hole total of 220.

Blaine Weiterman of TJC fired a combined 206 to take first place.

On the women’s side, Kimberley Quinn’s 36-hole total of 169 (83-86) paced UT Tyler to a sixth place finish. Her score tied for 13th place overall.

As a team, UT Tyler shot a 354 Tuesday to give the Patriots a 698-total for the TLU Lady Bulldog Invitational.

Cross-town contender Tyler Junior College won the women’s tournament, closing out with a two-round total of 649.

Fifteen teams and 85 players competed in the men’s tournament, while 73 golfers representing 14 different schools played in the women’s event.

The UT Tyler women return to the links Sept. 16-18 at Canyon Creek Country Club in Richardson for the UT Dallas Invitational. The Patriots men are off until Sept. 23-25 when they travel to Alexandria, La. for the Louisiana College Invitational at Oakwing Golf Course.
