Men Win Schreiner Shootout, Women 2nd

KERRVILLE, Texas -- The University of Texas at Tyler men's and women's golf teams started the 2011 season with impressive performances at the Schreiner Spring Shootout. The men won the tournament, while the women finished second overall.

The Patriot men, ranked No. 12 in the country, fired a combined 292 on Tuesday and finished with a two round total of 599 to edge fellow American Southwest Conference members Hardin-Simmons and LeTourneau by seven strokes.

Austin Quentin shot a team-low 148, including a one-under 71 on Tuesday, to lead UT Tyler and tie for third individually.

Cory Pieper finished fifth overall with a two-round total of 148 (77-73), followed by Jacob Walsh's 11th place 151 (75-76).  Joey Rippel (79-76) and Nick Holditch (83-72) tied for 17th place with a 155 total.     

Paul Aube played individually for the Patriots and shot a 158 (80-78) to finish 25th. 

LeTourneau's Justin Weant was the top men's individual, shooting a 146 (73-73) for the tournament.

The No. 15 Patriot women shot a combined 767 (339-337) to wrap up a second place finish, just five strokes behind Trinity.

Danica Weddle shot an impressive 164 (85-79) to led UT Tyler and finish tied for second place in the individual results.

Callie Rice (sixth) and Jennifer King (tenth) both finished in the top 10 as well, shooting 168 (84-84) and 172 (84-88), respectively.

Jordan Woodruff, playing as an individual, came in tied at 14th place with rounds of 92 and 82 for a total of 174. 

Katie Harris fired a 177 (91-86) for 18th place and Ceseli Slovacek shot a 20th place 179 (86-93).

Kayla Ketcheson of Northwood was the top women's finisher with a 158.

Both squads return to action March 7 with the men headed to the Mississippi College Invitational and the women in Temple for the UMHB Spring Invitational.
