Patriots Golfers Soar During First Round

The University of Texas at Tyler golf teams rose to the top of the leader board during the first round of the UT Tyler Invitational Monday at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler.

The men’s and women’s tournaments conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.

Paced by Lindsey Frank’s first round 70 and teammate Jacob Walsh’s par 72, UT Tyler holds a one stroke lead over McMurry in the team standings. Following Monday’s 18 holes, the Patriots sit at 297 followed by McMurry’s 298. At 299, Tyler JC is in third place.

Frank is second in the individual standings, trailing only LeTourneau’s Patrick Palmer who shot a three-under-par 69 for the fist round.

Charlie Calhoun and Frank both fired eagles for UT Tyler. Walsh had four birdies.

The 13-team field also includes Tyler JC, Texas Lutheran, Lon Morris, Hardin-Simmons, Texas-Dallas, LeTourneau, Mississippi College, Louisiana College, Millsaps, UT Tyler Navy, and Hendrix.

The UT Tyler women hold the lead in the Division III bracket after shooting a 356 Monday.

Kimber Quinn shot an 81 to lead the Patriots and finish the day tied for third place. She also led all players with 11 pars.

Patriots Amber Grounds and Kasey Boykin are tied for 17th with a first-round score of 90.

Competing in the women’s event are Tyler JC, Lon Morris, McMurry, Houston Baptist, LeTourneau, Hendrix, and Millsaps.
