The University of Texas at Tyler’s men’s golf team finished fifth at the Tyler Junior College Invitational, trailing only some of the top junior college programs in the nation in their fall tournament debut.

The Patriots finished 326-315-641 for the tournament, winning fifth place by seven strokes. UT Tyler finished behind Lon Morris, Two teams from Tyler Junior College, and Arkansas-Fort Smith. All three schools are or have been ranked in the NJCAA top twenty this season.

“We finished ahead of the teams we should have,” Patriots golf coach Kimg Campbell said, “but we didn’t play well enough. I was hoping we’d be more competitive out there, although it was our first tournament.”

Drew Johnson (SR/Corsicana, TX) led the Patriots with a 78-75-153 for a fifth place finish and an all-tourney nod. Coy Beck (FR/Canyon, TX) finished 80-80-160 in a tie for sixteenth place.

The Patriots women’s team finished the Invitational in tenth place. Cynthia Sciba (JR/Friendswood, TX) was the top golfer, finishing 91-94-185 for a tie for twenty-third.

The Patriots next test is March 16th in Arkansas, at Hendrix College.

“We’ll find out more about our team at Hendrix,” Campbell says. “Number eight Rhodes will be there, so we’ll have someone to compare ourselves to."
