SAN ANTONIO – The UT Tyler men’s and women’s golf teams closed out the fall portions of their schedules with a championship for the men and a new school record for the women at the Alamo City Classic played Monday and Tuesday at River Crossing Golf Course.

The first place finish marks the third team win for the No. 3-ranked Patriots' men in their five fall tournaments.  For the women, Katie Crawford’s second round 74 set a new UT Tyler women's mark for lowest single round.

With a team score of 579 for the tournament and led by Jacob Walsh, the Patriots’ men edged Trinity by three strokes for the title. Southwestern, Schreiner and Texas Lutheran rounded out the top five. 

The men fired an impressive 5-under 283 in the opening round, with Walsh, Austin Quinten and John Dukes all shooting 71 or better. The Patriots shot a 296 on Tuesday to take home the title. In addition to the team’s first place finish, Walsh was the top individual with a 3-under 144 (69-72) for the tournament.

Three other Patriots finished in the top 10, as Quinten’s even par 144 (70-74) was good enough for third place. Dukes and Joey Ripple tied for seventh place, both firing a combined 3-over 147.

On the women’s side, the Patriots rallied on Tuesday to finish in second place with team-total 652. 

A 335 round on Monday put the Patriots in a tie for third with Southwestern, five shots behind second place Trinity. On Tuesday, the women cut 18 strokes from their first round total, shooting a 317 in the final round. It was the day’s best round for any team.

In addition to her record setting day, Crawford placed second individually with a 10-over 154 for the tournament after shooting an 8-over 80 in round one. Other top finishers for the women were Danica Weddle with a ninth place 164 (82-82), and Taylor Sloane in tenth with a 165 (84-81).

Mary Hardin-Baylor shot 641 to win the women’s tournament.

Both UT Tyler teams now take the rest of the semester off before resuming play in the spring.
