King Campbell
King Campbell was hired in 2005 as the first full-time
golf coach for the University of Texas at Tyler. In 2007 he was also named the Assistant
Athletic Director for Budgeting and Finance.
During the 2011-2012 season, the men’s team won the American Southwest
Conference tournament by a record 46 strokes.
The men’s team ended
the year ranked 6th in the nation after a 6th place
finish at the NCAA Championships in Florida. The men also won six tournaments, which tied for
the most in the nation, and they were ranked in the top three for adjusted
scoring average. The women’s team
finished second at the ASC tournament and senior Danica Weddel received a bid
to the national tournament as an individual.
The women’s team won three tournaments and finished the year ranked 17th
in the nation. Campbell capped off a great season by being named the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) West Region Coach of the Year.
What Coach Campbell has been able to accomplish in six
years speaks for itself. Under his
tutelage, he has guided the men’s and women’s teams to a combined 34 wins,
including an unprecedented seven consecutive wins from the men’s team during
the 2009-10 season. He has coached 24
all-conference players, 17 academic all-conference players, 12 PING all-region
players, and four players have been selected as All-Americans.
A three-time ASC Coach of the Year, Campbell led the
women to an ASC title in 2009 and the men to the ASC crown in 2010 and
2012. He was also named the Eaton Golf
Pride West Regional Coach of the Year in 2010.
The men’s team has been ranked in the top 10 in the nation the past four
years. The women have been ranked in the
top 20, three out of the last four years.
During the course of the 2011-12 season, the men boasted
eight ASC Golfers of the Week selections and the women had five, the most of
any school in the American Southwest Conference. Five men and two women were named to their
respective All-ASC teams, showcasing some of the best talent in the
league. Three men and one woman were
named to the PING All-region team. Jacob
Walsh, who won the ASC individual title for the second year in a row, and
Danica Weddel were selected as All-Americans.
Before coming to UT Tyler, Campbell was at Lon Morris
College, where he served as head golf coach and also taught in the business
department. Under his direction, the
Bearcats were ranked as high as number eight in the nation and won several
tournaments. Both his men’s and women’s
teams qualified for the national tournament in 2004.
Campbell restarted his coaching career after spending 20
years with Bank of America as a senior commercial lender and as a private
client manager. He holds a BBA in
accounting and an MBA from Lamar University.
He played basketball at Stephen F. Austin State University and coached
the freshman basketball team while in graduate school at Lamar.
