Grant Spencer
Grant Spencer

Grant Spencer was named the UT Tyler Women's Golf head coach in June of 2013, the first full-time head coach for the women's program.

Grant Spencer joined the UT Tyler athletic staff in November of 2008 as the assistant cross country and track & field coach, and added assistant golf coach to his repertoire in July of 2010.

Since 2004, the UT Tyler men's and women's golf teams have been shared by one coach, most recently by King Campbell who retired in 2013.

Spencer helped coach the 2012-13 women's team to a National Runner-Up finish at the 2013 NCAA DIII National Championship tournament.  He also helped Laura Lindsey win the Individual national title as a freshman.

Spencer is heavily involved in recruiting and is in charge of coordinating the fitness programs for both the cross country and golf teams. He has been very instrumental in the golf teams' success the last three seasons.

Spencer, a native of Canada, spent his freshman season at Midland CC playing golf, earning all-region and Freshman of the Year honors. He later graduated from McNeese State University on a golf scholarship, being named team MVP and all-conference his senior season.

He continued to play competitive amateur golf in events such as the Texas State Amateur and the US Mid Amateur.

Spencer would not discover his love of running until shortly before moving to Tyler in 2000. Spencer began running marathons in 1998 and has since run the Boston Marathon four times and the New York Marathon once. However, Spencer cites the Dallas White Rock Marathon as his favorite.

Prior to UT Tyler, Spencer was the girls' cross country coach at T.K. Gorman, coaching 13 All-State runners, three teams to  TAPPS state titles and four individuals to state championships. He also coached the boys' team for two seasons before leaving the Crusaders following the 2007 season.

While Spencer served as the head coach for cross country, he also lent his talent for coaching distance runners on the track & field teams as an assistant. In the five seasons Spencer served as an assistant for track, he coached 20 state qualifiers and 11 state champions in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m events.

Spencer is married to Dr. Charla Spencer and they have a daughter, Andi, and a son, Evan.
