Men Win Third-Straight ASC CC Title, Women Finish Third

The UT Tyler men's cross country team won its third-straight American Southwest Conference championship, winning with a record-breaking prefect team score Saturday at Abilene State Park.

Junior Ben Donnan finished the 8K course in 25:26 to lead the Patriots and take the top individual honor.

Teammate R.J. Cowan was second at 26:05, the third place spot went to Corey Kellam with a time of 26:28, Chauncey Deller was fourth at 26:40, and Warren Brown finished in fifth place with a time of 26:43.

UT Tyler’s 15 team points easily separated them from second place McMurry with 48 points. Mississippi College (98), Sul Ross State (110) and Texas-Dallas (130) rounded out the top five team finishes.

In the early race, the UT Tyler women tied for third place overall with 71 team points, behind winner Mississippi College (40) and McMurry (47). Texas Lutheran also had 71 points.

Sarah Hankla paced UT Tyler with a school-record, third-place time of 24:38 in the 6K while, teammate Lindsey Moore finished eighth with a 25:29 time.

Heidi Stevens was 14th at 26:02 and Jessica Beers was 19th with a 26:52 time to give both Patriots spots in the top 20.

Texas Lutheran’s Megan Saenz was the top individual finisher, completing the race in 24:16.

UT Tyler head coach Bob Hepler was named the ASC men's coach of the year.

By virtue of their first place team finish, the UT Tyler men have earned an automatic trip to the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Meet set for Nov. 10 in Williamsburg, Va. Hankla, Moore, Stevens, Beers, and Rachel Carrol qualified for the regional meet as individuals for the UT Tyler women.
