Cross Country Teams Finish Third at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s cross country teams each finished in third place on Saturday at the Guilford College Quaker Invitational in North Carolina.

In the men’s 8K race, the Patriots finished better than five other teams and only 18 points behind second place Virginia Wesleyan.

Junior Ross Renfroe (Tyler, Texas) ran a personal season best of 27:29 to lead the Patriots with a third place individual finish.

In the women’s race, freshman Jessica Waninger (Tyler, Texas), freshman Ginny Murphy (Ovilla, Texas) and junior Sarah Hankla (Tyler, Texas) all finished with better times than the previous school record in the event of 24:38.

Waninger led the group in 12th place with a time of 24:16.64, while Murphy finished less than a second behind her in 24:16.91. Hankla, the previous record holder, broke her own record by finishing in 15th place with a time of 24:36.

As a team, the Patriots finished just one point behind second place Roanoke and ahead of nine other teams.

Both teams will now take one week off before traveling to Clinton, Miss., on Oct. 31 for the American Southwest Conference Championships hosted by Mississippi College.
