RECAP: #UTTylerXC wins Braveheart Invitational

TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s cross country team finished first and the women’s team took third at the Braveheart Invitational on Friday with Will McIlroy leading the Patriots with a third-place finish at the home event.

McIlroy ran a 16:21.70 for the Patriots to finish third of 94 on the men’s side, while Rachel Willis led the women’s team by running a 20:29.46 for eighth with Theresa Simmons placing ninth with a time of 20:36.00 in her second collegiate race. McIlroy and Willis were both coming off season-opening wins at the King Campbell Spectacular and have now led the Patriots in both of the meets this season.

The Patriot men won the meet with four top-10 runners in the race, including Shafen Borah who was seventh with a run of 16:30.29 and Justin Tokuz who was eighth after running  a 16:31.31. Matthew Cecotti was 10th overall with a time of 16:32.96 and sophomore Nathan Adams was 11th (16:33).

Michaela Heys finished 16th on the women’s side and third for the Patriots with a time of 21:13.96 and Tristin Salem was 28th after clocking a 22:18 on her home course.

UT Tyler will return to action next Saturday when it runs at the Rhodes College Invitational on Saturday in Memphis, Tennessee.
