TYLER – The UT Tyler Cross Country program will host the Braveheart Invitational at 7 p.m. on Friday on the UT Tyler campus trails with the starting and finish lines at the intramural fields. The men’s 5K has nine teams and 81 entries, while the women’s field included 13 teams and 97 runners who will be navigating the trails.

The Patriots are hosting a meet for the second straight week following the King Campbell Spectacular last Friday where senior Rachel Willis and sophomore Will McIlroy won the first meet of their careers. Willis won the women’s side of the 2.06-mile race in a time of 13:02 and McIlroy ran a 10:41.2 to edge out Justin Tokuz who crossed in 10:41.99 for the Patriots. The UT Tyler men’s team had the top-4 finishers and six of the top-10, while the women’s team took three of the top-5 finishes. McIlroy was named the American Southwest Conference Runner of the Week on Tuesday for his performance in the season-opening meet.

“Will knows how to push hard,” UT Tyler coach Bob Hepler said. “I loved how he took on several challengers throughout the race and persevered. His teammates will push him every week. Should be an exciting year.”

The men's team will be represented by 16 runners, including Nathan Adams, Shafen Borah, Quinton Bryson, Matthew Cecotti, Jackson Cook, Carlos Flores, Andrew Hernandez, Daniel Juren, Conor Linekin, McIlroy, Jose Prieto, Charlie Quintero, Antonio Sanchez, Jace Seymour,

Tokuz and Zachary Tucker. The women will send eight runners to the trails with Michaela Heys, Kiara Mayfield, Lianne McKee, Tristin Salem, Theresa Simmons, Courtney Smith, Rachel Willis and Amy Wyatt competing for the Patriots.

UT Tyler will return to competition next week at the Rhodes College Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16 in Memphis, Tennessee.
