Willis, McIlroy win King Campbell Spectacular

TYLER – Rachel Willis and Will McIlroy both won their first collegiate cross country races to highlight an impressive night by the UT Tyler Patriots on Friday at the King Campbell Spectacular at the Eagle’s Landing Nature Course.

Willis ran a 13:02 on the 2.06-mile course to win the women’s division for the Patriots, while McIlroy ran a 10:41.2 to edge out teammate Justin Tokuz who crossed in 10:41.99 to take second. The UT Tyler men’s team claimed the first four spots in the race with Matthew Cecotti (10:45) and Shafen Borah (10:46) earning third and fourth in the race. Nathan Adams crossed the finish line along Old Omen road in a time of 10:50 for seventh and Jackson Cook was ninth with a result of 11:05 for the Patriots.

Willis, a senior from Hallsville, earned her first win while freshman Theresa Simmons was third with a time of 13:23 in her first collegiate race. Michaela Hey, who won the American Southwest Conference Steeplechase, was fifth with a time of 13:48 and Tristin Salem was 15th after running a 14:18 in the home meet.

UT Tyler will host the Braveheart Invitational next Friday at 7 p.m. on the campus trails.
