RECAP: Patriots take 3rd, Willis 8th at ASC Championships

AUSTIN – Rachel Willis finished eighth overall to lead the UT Tyler Patriots who claimed third place in the team standings at the American Southwest Conference Championships on Saturday at Balcones Country Club.


A junior from Hallsville, Willis earned a regional berth by running a 23:59 on the 6K course to earn her first top-10 finish at a conference meet. Holly Nohavitza was second on the UT Tyler team to cross the line and 14th overall with a time of 24:56, while fellow senior Bethany Cox ran a 25:33 for 19th in the individual standings. Willis was coming off finishing fourth two weeks ago a the University of Dallas meet.

Mari Rodriguez and Lauren Halliday were 23 and 24 overall, respectively, with Rodriguez finishing in a time of 25:59 and Halliday in 26:04 on the hilly west Austin course. A pair of freshmen were next with Stephanie Pierce running a 26:29 and Tristin Salem a 26:49 for 27th and 29th places and Michaela Hey ran 27:08 for 31st.

UT Dallas snapped a three-year run of championships by the Patriots by claiming the team title. The Comets were led by the top-two finishers at the meet with Lindsey Rayborn winning the individual championship with a run of 22:59 for medalist honors and Hollis Ratliff finishing the course in 23:00 for second.

McMurry would finish second overall in the team standings while LeTourneau was fifth and East Texas Baptist sixth.
