RICHARDSON – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team had its season end with a 79-68 loss to Concordia in the American Southwest Conference Championship quarterfinals on Thursday at the UTD Activity Center.

The Patriots (17-9) led by as many as 13 points in the first half against the Tornados (15-11) who advance to the ASC Championship semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday against the ETBU-Howard Payne winner.

Alex Kochner led the Patriots with 26 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in the game, while Carissa Spiker added 12 points and Brittany Johnson scored 10. Kochner recorded her ninth double-double of the season after going 10-for-10 at the free-throw line and hitting seven shots from the field. She finished her senior season averaging 13.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for the Patriots.

UT Tyler, which went 20 of 25 at the free-throw line, struggled throughout the game shooting just 31.3 percent from the field and being limited to 8-for-26 on 3-pointers. The Patriots and Tornados were tied 51-51 going to the fourth quarter before CTX went on a 14-1 run to begin the fourth quarter to take a 65-52 lead with 4:58 to play. UT Tyler would try to get back into the game with Bianca Valderrama hitting a pair of shots and Johnson a layup to cut the deficit to 65-58 with 3:38 to play. A Johnson 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining cut it to 74-68 and was the team’s final hope, but Concordia iced the game with a mixture of hitting free throws and missed shots from the Patriots.

Samantha Odom, Valderrama and Alexus Bertrand finished the game with six points each for the Patriots who had earned a 64-45 win over Concordia in the regular-season matchup back in December in Tyler. Kochner also led the team with three assists, while Valderrama added seven rebounds to her six points in the game.

Concordia’s Kaycie Dunkerley scored a game-high 30 points and also secured seven rebounds in the win, while Jaela Dejean went for 20 points and Mercedes Ellison added 14 points. Dunkerley was 6-for-12 on 3-pointers in the game, hitting all but one of the seven 3-pointers that Concordia finished with. CTX shot 49.1 percent from the field and was 20 of 25 from the free-throw line.

UT Tyler trailed 29-28 at halftime after leading throughout the first half after a buzzer-beating shot from Concordia at the end of the second quarter. The Patriots led 20-7 with 8:55 remaining in the first half before the Tornados started chipping away to get back into the game. Kochner led the Patriots with 17 points and nine rebounds after the opening 20 minutes, while the rest of the team had just 11 points. The Patriots, who led 15-7 after the first quarter, were limited to 31.3 percent shooting, including going 4-for-12 on 3-pointers.
