TYLER – Alex Kochner scored 18 points and Samantha Odom secured a career-high 12 rebounds as the UT Tyler women’s basketball team extended a season-best four-game winning streak with a 78-68 win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (14-7, 10-4 ASC) owned the glass with a 39-24 rebounding advantage, shot 46.4 percent from the field and was 19 of 23 (82.6 percent) at the free-throw line as they swept the American Southwest Conference East Division season series against the Tigers (17-4, 11-3). The Patriots led for 38 minutes of the game and finished with 13 offensive rebounds, led by Kochner and Odom who had three each.

“I felt like we played a complete game today,” UT Tyler coach Kendra Hassell said. “I never saw a let down in intensity and we battled to win one possession at a time. We did a great job on the boards and got some second chance opportunities late in the game that helped us control the clock. Overall, I was very proud of our consistent effort and offensive execution.”

Kochner scored her team-high 18 points after hitting seven field goals and also had six rebounds and three assists in the win. Carissa Spiker added 15 points on Saturday against the Tigers after scoring a career-high 25 on Thursday in the team’s win over LeTourneau. Spiker would also add six rebounds and four assists, while Brittany Johnson had 14 points and five rebounds. Johnson and Kochner each hit two 3-pointers for the Patriots who were 7-for-23 on 3-pointers and limited ETBU to 4-for-17 from beyond the arc with strong defensive play.

Bianca Valderrama scored 12 of the 15 points from the UT Tyler bench and also had three rebounds. Valderrama was 4-for-6 from the field and 4-for-5 at the free-throw line. Odom, who had 12 rebounds, would finish the game with eight points and three assists while Alexus Bertrand led the Patriots with six assists and three steals. Bertrand now has 70 assists on the season would also score eight points against the Tigers with five of points coming at the free throw line.

ETBU’s Madison McCoy recorded a game-high 21 points to lead the Tigers who were limited to their 23.5 percent shooting on 3-pointers. ETBU would finish the game with a 34-30 scoring advantage in the paint despite the 15-rebound disparity.

The game against the Comets is the team’s final regular-season home game with the program honoring its senior class of Kochner, Bertrand, Johnson and Demi Cumby before tipoff.
