TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 all-time in New Year’s Eve games after rolling to a 63-49 non-conference win over Jarvis Christian on Sunday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (7-5) struggled shooting in the game but overcame it by forcing 27 turnovers by the Bulldogs who fell to 1-9 on their season. UT Tyler trailed by one after the first quarter, but put the game away with double-digit scored differentials in the second and third quarters. Up 28-19 at halftime, the Patriots only trailed once in the entire game and are now 5-1 on their home court this season.

Carissa Spiker scored a season-high 20 points after going 7-for-14 from the field and 5 of 6 at the free-throw line, while Shadazia Birchette came in as a reserve and went for 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Patriots. Spiker, who made her first start of the season, has now scored in double-figures in eight games and is averaging 11 points per game in her sophomore season. She has three 20-plus point performances in her career, including a career-high 23 against Louisiana College last season in the American Southwest Conference tournament.

Alex Kochner led the team with 10 rebounds and also had eight points and three assists, while Brittany Johnson had six points and four rebounds. Kochner leads UT Tyler with 8.9 rebounds per game this season and has six double-digit rebound performances through 12 games in her senior season, including three straight after having 11 against Austin College and 14 against Whitworth. Bianca Valderrama, Demi Cumby and Samantha Odom each added four points each with Valderrama securing eight rebounds in 20 minutes of play off the bench.

UT Tyler owned the paint against the Bulldogs with 34 points coming inside, while the team took advantage of the JCC turnovers by converting them into 24 points. UTT, which secured a 75-43 win over Schreiner on Dec. 31, 2014 and a 63-45 win over Jarvis on Dec. 31, 2012, also had a 14-0 scoring advantage on fast breaks against the Bulldogs on the final day of 2017.

The Patriots will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 4 against Howard Payne in Brownwood before playing Sul Ross on Saturday, Jan. 6 in Alpine. The team returns to the HPC court on Jan. 11 when it hosts Louisiana College.
