TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team will conduct its first practice of the 2017-18 season at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Herrington Patriot Center with head coach Kendra Hassell having recorded a 50-9 record entering her third season leading the program.

UT Tyler’s month of preseason practices will lead into the start of the season against Howard Payne on Friday, Nov. 17 at the HPC before travelling to San Antonio to play Cornell College and Trinity on Nov. 25 and 26 the second week of the season. The Patriots are scheduled to play 12 regular-season home games where they are 28-2 at over the past two years, including American Southwest Conference games against Mary Hardin-Baylor, Concordia, Louisiana College, Belhaven, LeTourneau, East Texas Baptist, Ozarks and UT Dallas.

“As we start practices we will focus on building toughness and developing chemistry,” Hassell said. “The preseason provides an opportunity for us to come together as a unit and will give us a chance to help this team find their identity. If we can truly invest, grow and compete every day, and continue building our culture we could have a special season.”

The Patriots are coming off a 20-7 record last season where they reached the American Southwest Conference Championship semifinals, but lost to Louisiana College to have their season end without an NCAA appearance after reaching the Elite 8 in the 2015-16 season. UT Tyler will look to return to the national tournament this season after the departure of a senior class which led the program to a 104-16 record over their four years.

“Our team will look a lot different after graduating seven seniors from last year’s squad,” Hassell said “I’m excited to combine a great core of returners with an incoming class that has potential to make an immediate impact. It will be fun to start putting the pieces together and to see how this group will develop as a team.”
