TYLER – No. 3 UT Tyler remained undefeated and extended a 21-game regular-season winning streak with a 51-40 non-conference win over Birmingham Southern on Monday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (5-0) will open American Southwest Conference play this week when they travel to play at Sul Ross on Thursday and Howard Payne on Saturday. UT Tyler earned a 79-75 non-conference win over HPU last week and will start ASC play after going 15-0 in the conference last season. BSC falls to 1-5 on the season with the loss in Tyler.

UT Tyler enters ASC play unblemished after brushing off a slow start against Birmingham Southern to pull way in the fourth with a 22-11 scoring advantage in the final 10 minutes. Michelle Obach led the Patriots with 14 points with 11 of those points coming in the second half, while D’Onna Matthews and Samantha Odom had eight points each. Matthews led the team with nine rebounds and Odom added four rebounds to her performance.

The Patriots struggled early by going 1-for-16 from the field in the first quarter and trailed 12-4 after the opening 10 minutes. Obach would score the only points of the first quarter by a Patriot with a jumper four minutes into the game. UT Tyler trailed 21-16 at halftime, but would fight back to tie the game at 29 after three quarters with Matthews hitting two free throws to match the Panthers. The fourth quarter belonged to the Patriots who would go on a 5-0 run to start the quarter with a jumper from freshman Demi Cumby and a 3-pointer by Obach. The lead quickly grew to double digits when Odom hit a 3-pointer with five to play and was at 13 with a Re’Elle Miller free throw.

UT Tyler owned a 45-31 rebounding advantage and a 22-8 scoring margin in the paint, but were limited to a 32.1 shooting percentage and were only 4-for-19 on 3-pointers. BSC struggled against the UT Tyler defense which limited the Panthers to only 27.1 percent shooting.

The Patriots are now 2-0 at home this season and have won 18 straight games inside the Herrington Patriot Center.
