TYLER – UT Tyler senior Michelle Obach earned American Southwest Conference Women’s Basketball All-Conference and ASC East Division First-Team honors, while D’Onna Matthews, Alexus Bertrand, Dia Evans and Makenzi May were honored with selections following a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Obach and Matthews were both named to the ASC East Division First-Team for the Patriots who finished the season with a 20-7 record and advanced to the ASC Championship semifinals. Matthews and Bertrand were named to the ASC East Division All-Defensive Team, while Evans and May were ASC East Division Honorable Mention selections.

Obach led the Patriots in scoring in her final year at UT Tyler with 15.0 points, 87 assists and 37 steals. A Tyler native, Obach transferred to UT Tyler after playing her freshman season at Merrimack College and would become one of the top players in program history. She completed her three-year career with the Patriots with 1,282 points which is the fourth most in program history and is second all-time with 323 assists and 179 steals. Her 38 points as a junior against UT Dallas is the most points ever scored in a game for the Patriots and she would score a season-best 30 points against Belhaven as a senior. Obach went for 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the final game of the season in the ASC Championship semifinals.

“Michelle is one of the hardest working players I have ever coached,” UT Tyler head coach Kendra Hassell said. “The time she spent in the gym outside of practice is what set her apart on the court. Michelle should be remembered as a competitor.  In her senior season, she set the tone in practice by competing in every drill and she challenged her teammates to do the same.”

A San Antonio native, Matthews played all four seasons at UT Tyler and earned her first ASC honors of her career by being named to the ASC East Division First-Team and to the ASC East Division All-Defensive Team. Matthews, who led the team with four double-doubles this season, was a versatile player for the Patriots by averaging 10.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and leading the team with 41 blocked shots. She finishes her career second all-time in blocked shots with 104 in 106 games played and with 884 career points.

“D’Onna did a great job for us on defense this year,” Hassell said. “She used her length really well to alter or block shots and grab tough rebounds. Her athleticism made her tough to guard on the offensive end as well. D’Onna did a good job of attacking the basket and also hitting the midrange jumper in the paint.”

Bertrand earned ASC East Division All-Defensive honors as a junior after finishing the year with 18 steals and 4.6 points per game, while May and Evans were honorable mention selections in their senior seasons. Evans had a career year for the Patriots after leading the Patriots with 7.0 rebounds per game and also averaging 8.4 rebounds per game. A Corpus Christi native, Evans recorded the first double-double of her career with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the ASC Championship semifinals. May, a guard from Mont Belvieu, finished her four-year UT Tyler career as the program’s all-time 3-point leader with 210 in her career. She is second all-time in ASC history finishing just seven from the all-time conference record. May, who earned ASC First-Team as a junior and was an ASC All-Freshman selection in the 2013-14 season, played in a program record 120 games, including starting all 59 over the past two seasons. She averaged 7.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game as a senior and finished her career with 1,028 points.
