MARSHALL – Michelle Obach had 16 points and Demi Cumby pulled down 12 rebounds to help lead the UT Tyler women’s basketball team to a 74-49 win over East Texas Baptist on Thursday at the Ornelas Gym to extend a five-game winning streak.

The Patriots (16-5, 9-4 ASC) completed the season-sweep of ETBU (3-17, 1-11 ASC) after also topping the Tigers last Saturday (87-73) in Tyler and have now won eight of nine games. UT Tyler jumped out to a 22-point halftime lead on the road in their 11th double-digit margin of victory this season and third straight.

“Our defensive intensity was the difference in the game,” UT Tyler head coach Kendra Hassell said. “We really set the tone in the first half by forcing them to take tough contested shots. We also pursued rebounds with a lot of urgency. Overall, I thought it was a great team effort.”

Obach led the Patriots with her 16 points after hitting five shots from the field and five from the free-throw line. The senior came into the game averaging just over 21 points over the past five games, including 19 last Saturday in the first matchup against ETBU. She now has scored 1,192 career points and is now second in program history with 305 career assists after having three on Thursday. Cumby matched her career-best with 12 rebounds against the Tigers and would also score seven points. A junior from Athens, Cumby also had 12 rebounds in a win over Concordia. She would knock down three shots in Marshall and had seven of her 12 rebounds come on the offensive side of the court.

Makenzi May finished the game with nine points, including hitting one 3-pointer. She now has 206 in her career which is approaching the all-time ASC record of 217. May was 4-for-5 from the field against the Tigers and also added two assists and two steals. D’Onna Matthews added 12 points after going 6-for-9 from the field and also had five rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. A senior from San Antonio, Matthews is second in program history with 89 career blocked shots.

Dia Evans was one rebound away from her first double-double after going for 10 points and nine rebounds. She was 5-for-11 from the field and also added three assists, a blocked shot and two steals. Shuntay Raglin added four points and three rebounds in the win, while Carissa Spiker had four points and three rebounds for the UT Tyler bench. The Patriots finished the game with a 48-34 rebounding advantage and took 16 more shots than ETBU in the game. UT Tyler went 11-for-17 from the free-throw line and shot 42.3 percent from the field despite only hitting three of its 21 three-point attempts. The plus-14 rebounding margin was tied for the second best this season with 15 against CTX being the most.

The Patriots owned their 42-18 halftime lead with Obach and Matthews having eight points each and May adding seven. May hit a 3-pointer and jumper from just within the arc at the end of the half for the 22-point advantage after 20 minutes.

UT Tyler returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana. The Patriots earned an 89-68 win over the Wildcats in their meeting last Thursday in Tyler and are currently 5-3 away from home.
