PREVIEW: @UTTylerWBB set to host LC, ETBU at HPC

TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team will host Louisiana College on Thursday and East Texas Baptist on Saturday in a pair of American Southwest Conference games at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots (13-5, 6-4 ASC) are currently tied for second in the ASC East Division with six conference games remaining on their schedule. UT Dallas leads the division with a 10-1 ASC record, while Howard Payne (8-2 ASC) tops the ASC West Division. The ASC Championship will be hosted at the ASC West Division Champions home court this season. LC (5-10, 4-5) will take on the Patriots at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, while ETBU (3-14, 1-8 ASC) takes the court at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Tyler.

UT Tyler, which is 9-2 at home this season, comes into this week on a two-game winning streak after earning a 104-95 overtime win over Belhaven in its only game last weekend. Michelle Obach led the team with 30 points and 10 assists for her first double-double of the season, while D’Onna Matthews scored 19 points and Shuntay Raglin had 16 points. Carissa Spiker recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Patriots. UT Tyler was 27-for-33 (81.8 percent) from the free-throw line in the win and would move to 2-0 in overtime contests after also topping Concordia earlier this season.

Obach leads the Patriots with 14.6 points per game, 63 assists and 25 steals this season. A senior from Tyler, Obach is in her third season with the Patriots after transferring from Merrimack where she played as a freshman. She has scored 1,142 career points as a Patriot and is third all-time in program history with 299 assists and 167 steals. Makenzi May enters this week with 982 career points and with 201 career 3-pointers. A senior guard, May hit three 3-pointers in the overtime win at Belhaven to pass the milestone and is within striking distance of the ASC record of 217. May is averaging 8.3 points per game this season and also has 34 assists.

Dia Evans leads the team 6.6 rebounds per game and is also averaging 7.2 points per game. She had a team-best 11 rebounds in the win in Mississippi, while Raglin is now averaging 9.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

Matthews, a senior from San Antonio, is second all-time in program history with 82 career blocks and is averaging 10.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She has scored 791 career points and has 442 career rebounds. Matthews scored her career-best with 25 points last season against ETBU. Demi Cumby leads the newcomers with 7.2 points per game, while Re’Elle Miller is at 5.2 points and Alexus Bertrand is adding 4.8 points per game. The Patriots have hit 127 3-pointers this season with May leading the team with 35 and Obach with 31. Cumby has 19 3-pointer and Bertrand 13 for the Patriots who are shooting 43.5 percent from the field.

LC enters Thursday’s game on an three-game losing streak, including a 79-65 loss at UT Dallas last Saturday while ETBU snapped a four-game losing streak by earning a 66-64 road win over Ozarks last week.

UT Tyler will honor its senior class of Obach, Matthews, May, Miller, Evans, Raglin, Adrienne Drake and Madison Wilson on Saturday prior to the game. The class is 97-14 over the past four years coming into this week.
